SEPTEMBER 2010

Lion Ralph George:  Lion Ralph passed away on august 8.  He would have been 90 on august 19.  Lion Ralph was a lion for 47 years; he had been a member of numerous Lion clubs during his years in Lionism.  Lion Ralph was our scribe for many years until this past winter due to failing health.  Lion “Ralphie” was a very intelligent and inquisitive man; and, he loved to talk.  Lion Ralph was truly unique and he will be missed.  A memorial service was held on August 28 at his church, First United Methodist; 12 Lions attended the service along with Rita Miller, King Lion Gary’s wife as the King Lion had to work.

Adopt A Highway:  Our 3rd session of this year’s highway clean-up was held on August 14.  Thanks to those members who came out to pick up trash.  Our last session will be on October 16.

Memorial Page:  Our Webmaster, Lion Larry Parisi, has established a memorial page on our web site.  All members are welcome to post their tributes on this page, contact Lion Larry P.  Donations to the club in the name of a late Lion would also be accepted.

September Broom and Bag Sale:  As noted on the calendar below our September Broom and Bag Sale will be held on the 13th-16th.  We will be selling in the South Hills.  (Lion Joe Smith territory) and Meadowood (Lion Bill and Lion Clint territory) and hopefully other areas.  We need sellers and drivers.  We will meet at 5:45 at the Blind Association.

Scoot & Toot:  The club will sponsor a 5K (3.2miles) run which will be held on October 9 at Alameda Park.  We need everyone’s help with this event by getting sponsors, promoting the event and of course the day of the run.  If you need sponsorship letters or race registration forms, please contact Lion Larry Jack or Lion Jennifer.   The Butler Blind Association’s Chili Cook-off will be going on that day and will be part of the run’s activities.

Members Dropped:  At the August Board Meeting the Board approved dropping two members from our rolls; Wendy Bilowich and James Haag.

Membership Drive:  We are about to launch our new “Fantasy” membership drive campaign.  Start thinking about prospective members and get ready to play and have some fun.

Optical Fund:  2 individuals were assisted with eye exams and eyeglasses at a cost of $165.

Butler Fall Festival:  The Festival is Sept. 18; we have a booth on Main Street and possibly on the corner of Cunningham and McKean.  We will sell Enjoy Books, the 1940 videos, brooms and garbage bags and promote the Scoot & Toot and membership.

District Governor’s Projects:  At our August 17th meeting K.L. Gary presented D.G. Fred our check for the D.G.’s projects.  The contribution to D.G.’s projects is $20 a member.  The following Lions charities benefit from D.G.’s projects:  PA Lions Beacon Lodge for the Blind, Leader Dogs for the Blind (MI), Lions clubs International Foundation, PA Lions Hearing Research Foundation, PA Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research and Diabetes Research, PA State Foundation, Western PA Lions Hearing Foundation, Lions Youth Outreach Program, VIP Sports and Lions of PA for Leader Dogs.

The Community Betterment Committee:  This Committee has met and established numerous potential activities we could get involved in.  We will continue to Adopt-A-Highway, clean the bus shelters and participate in health fairs.  I do not have room here to list them all.  The top 4 are volunteer drivers for the Blind Association, volunteers to perform vision screenings, volunteers at the Community Health Clinic and volunteers at Broad Street School.  If you can get involved with any of these activities, please contact Lion Bill Hetrick.

Awards Night:  Awards Night will be held on October 5 at the Blind Association.  This is a spouse/friend night; business casual attire.  This is always a special night.  Please plan on attending.  Sign-up sheets will be circulated at the upcoming meeting.

September Birthdays:  Six Lions are celebrating birthdays in September:    Neil Ashbaugh (2), Jim Crowley (2), Gary Zinman (17), Tom Faller (18), George Bonnett (21) and Terry Stackhouse (28).  Happy birthday to our September birthday Lions!
