February 2012
Welcome: To our newest member, Lion
Kathy Kerry whose membership was approved by the Board on January 24. Lion Kathy is the lady friend of Lion Bob
Baron who is her sponsor.
Lion Clubs International (LCI) Catalog Orders: LCI is offering a special on shipping of
orders placed through the catalog in February.
The cost of shipping will only be $2.29 for all orders over $50. There is no paper catalog anymore; anyone
with access to the internet can view the catalog and even place an order if
they like. If you are interested in
ordering anything contact Lion Wink; he would place one consolidated order. The Club would be billed. You would then need to reimburse the Club by
paying the Treasurer the cost of your order.
Dues Increase: At the January Board meeting
the Board approved a dues increase starting next Lions year (7-1-12 –
6-30-13). Our current dues, which have
not been raised for many years, are no longer enough to support our
expenses. The State is raising our dues
$1.50 per member this year and another $1.50 next year. So, effective July 1, 2012, our yearly dues
will be as follows: regular and
privileged members will be $72, an increase of $12 a year; family members will
be $48, an increase of $8 a year; and life members will be $33, an increase of
$8 a year. As you know, we cannot use
any funds we raise from the public for Club use. The cost of running the Club is defrayed by
our dues, our in Club 50/50 and joker poker, our meals and fines.
January Board Meeting Highlights: At the
Board meeting on January 24 the Board approved the following expenditures: (charities) $1000 to LCIF for our final
installment of our $5000 commitment to Campaign Sight First II; $1000 to LCIF
in support of the Lions measles initiative; $100 to Leader Dogs for the Blind
and $100 to SVOSH at Southern College of Optometry; (admin) $100 for District
Governor’s gift; $100 for an ad in the State Convention program; $188 for
printing an updated Club pamphlet. The
Board also approved the donation of a large print book to the Butler Public
Library in the memory of Lion Jim Crowley; and voted to drop the memberships of
Dovenspike and Parisi.
Club Pamphlet: Has been updated and a new
supply has been printed. They are stored
upstairs at the Blind Association. If
you need any, help yourself or contact Lion Wink.
Butler Lions Sweetheart Night: Will be
our February 21 meeting. All members are
encouraged to bring their sweethearts to the meeting. The program that night will be a presentation
on the Reality Tour.
Reservation Policy for Special Meetings (i.e. spouse/friend nights,
Christmas Party, Club Picnic, etc.): The Board
approved the following policy; if you
make reservations for a special meeting and do not attend that meeting or
cancel your reservation before noon the day before the meeting, you will be
charged for the reservation.
Visitation to Slippery Rock Lions Club: Will be
February 16. If you are interested in
going, you must sign-up by February 12.
For those who signed-up, we will meet at the Clearview Mall at 5:15 and
carpool from there.
Nominations for Lions Year 2012-2013: The
Nominating Committee posts the following slate of officers for the 2012-2013
Lions year. The election of officers
will be held on the April 3 meeting. If
you are interested in any of these positions and want your name on the ballot,
contact Lion Bill Hetrick before April 1.

February Board Meeting: Will be
February 28 at the Blind Association starting at 6:30 p.m. All Board members are expected to
attend. Non-board members are always
welcome.
March 6 Meeting: Will be held at the Blind
Association starting at 6:30 p.m. Bill
Pitzer will speak to us about long-term care planning.
Riverside Area Lions Club’s 50th Anniversary: Will be held at Camp Kon-O-Kwee starting at
5:30 on March 17. The cost for the
buffet dinner with desert is $20. If
interested in going sign-up on the sign-up sheet or contact Lion Wink NLT March
6.
Disaster Relief Program of the Butler Chapter of the American Red Cross: The Board was informed that the local Red
Cross has a “wish list” for razors and shaving cream which they can provide to
individuals who lose their dwelling as a result of a disaster. We are asking all members to please support
this effort by bringing these items to the Blind Association either before a
meeting or during their business hours.
We will run this collection drive through the end of March.
Tree Planting: As you know, our International
President Tam has challenged all Lions to plant trees. We have two tree planting events in our
future; one is a district project that will be held on May 5 in southern
Armstrong County and the other will be at Lion Don McCandless’s. The date for planting the trees at Lion Don’s
will be determined by when his trees are delivered.
Mother’s Day Rose Sale: The
fundraising committee voted to hold a Mother’s Day rose sale again. The cost will be $16 a dozen picked up at the
Blind Association or $20 if delivered. If
more than one dozen roses are delivered to the same address, only the first
dozen will be $20, the others will be $16 each.
Cut off day for rose orders is April 30.
The roses will be available on May 11 and/or May 12 (details on this are
still being worked out). The final
details and sales flyers will be forthcoming.
Happy Birthday to the following Lions: Debbie Hayes-7th; Dick Schwab-10th; Kim Jarvis-24th
