COMMUNITY BETTERMENT

WELCOME TO THE CHAIRPERSONS PAGE OF THE COMMUNITY BETTERMENT COMMITTEE!

THE VICE PRESIDENT IN CHARGE OF THIS COMMITTEE IS LION NEIL ASHBAUGH.

THE COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON IS LION BILL HETRICK.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE: LIONS:  JOHN HOUSTON,  DON MCCANDLESS AND DON GIBALA.

The Committee Chair Lion Bill Hetrick has issued a challenge to all Butler Club members to get involved in helping our community.  Lion Bill has ask all members to list project that they think are important and in which our club might take on.  The list can be long and the Community Betterment Committee will pick from that list projects that we will work on.  Some of the projects listed might be worked on in following years instead of immediately.  If you have any ideas or comments please contact Lion Bill or any members of this committee.  Help is need from all club members.

The Community Betterment Committee  (Copied from September 2010 TALE)

This Committee has met and established numerous potential activities we could get involved in.  We will continue to Adopt-A-Highway, clean the bus shelters and participate in health fairs.  I do not have room here to list them all.  The top 4 are volunteer drivers for the Blind Association, volunteers to perform vision screenings, volunteers at the Community Health Clinic and volunteers at Broad Street School.  If you can get involved with any of these activities, please contact Lion Bill Hetrick. (Taken from the September TALE)

September 21, 2010 meeting:

Lion John Houston reported for the chairperson.  There are now many new volunteers signed up for the Broad Street School project and the Community Health Clinic.

The committee is now in the process of helping all playgrounds in the City of Butler and Butler Township.  Pictures have been taken of the basketball courts on each playground.  It is noted that lines need painted, hoops and nets are in bad shape.  Permission is being asked for the board of directors to approve the purchase of two break-away hoops that will break-away from the back-board and not bend when players jump up and hang from the hoop. (Aprox. cost of each hoop is around $200.00.)  This is the cause of many hoops bending and breaking. This is a start of a replacement project for the hoops in badly need of repair.

The South Hills playground has been the first one our club has helped and with the help of city employees lines have been painted and the basketball court is in good shape.  Lion John Houston invited all members to drive by and take a look at it if you get a chance.

The Community Betterment Committee:  The board approved the purchase of 2 breakaway basketball hoops; approximately $600.00 to be donated to the City of Butler, when needed, to maintain the City’s basketball courts.  This purchase was recommended by the Community Better Committee. (Lion Wink, Oct. 2010 TALE)

Adopt-A-Highway:  Our first session was held on April 2, 2011.  The cold and snow and the recent closing of Stanley’s Bakery made Saturday’s clean-up not one of our shiningest moments.  The job did get done, however, thanks to five dedicated Lions (Steve, Terry, Bill, Larry P. and VDG Don)!  Our next session scheduled for June 4 promises to be better; nicer weather and Stanley’s donuts becoming a faint (but pleasant) memory.  Don’t fear trash pickers, we will find suitable donuts for future clean-ups!
